This 1,644m-high mountain is the symbol of Sobokata Quasi-National Park, said to be Kyushu's last unexplored region. It still boasts a group of rocky peaks, including Kozumidaki, Nimaidaki, and Sodedaki (daki means rock cliff), as well as a deep primeval forest enveloping the riverside valley. With multiple hiking routes and stunning seasonal scenery, including the Akebono azalea in spring and the colorful leaves in autumn, it attracts many visitors from both within and outside the prefecture.
[What is Sobokata Quasi-National Park?]
The Okueyama mountain range is a collection of mountains that emerged when dykes formed underground by volcanic activity were uplifted and eroded. Surrounding Okueyama are large granite porphyry dykes such as Mt. Hokodake, Mt. Hiei, Mt. Yahazudake, and Mt. Mukabaki.
