From the scenic viewpoints scattered across Mount Tomiba (186m) towering over Shimanourashima, you can get a panoramic view of the island's unique natural beauty, and along the mountain's ridge, 33 stone Kannon statues have been placed at intervals of about 100m. Created in 1841 (Tempo 12) based on the "Saigoku Thirty-three Kannon Temples" found in the six Kinki prefectures and Gifu prefecture, the pilgrimage to the 33 Kannon Temples in the Saigoku region is known as the "Shimanoura Saigoku Thirty-three Kannon Pilgrimage," and many people regularly visit the island for this purpose.
Each Kannon statue is engraved with the name of the temple where the statue is located and the name of the donor, and they are still washed and purified by the donors' descendants every year before the Tomibayama Festival in March.
