Currently, the Shiroyama Bell is rung six times a day (6:00, 8:00, 10:00, 12:00, 15:00, and 17:00).
This bell was donated to Horaiyama Hachimangu Shrine (now Imayama Hachimangu Shrine) by the feudal lord at the time, Arima Yasuzumi, in 1656.
Since the first bell began chiming in 1878, it has continued to tell the time to citizens for over 140 years.
The current bell is the second generation, made with donations from citizens, and has been chiming the time since February 11, 1963.
The first bell has the word "Nobeoka" engraved on it, making it the oldest document in which the name "Nobeoka" appears.
This Bell Festival has been held every year on June 10th, the anniversary of the time, since 1941 (Showa 16) to express gratitude to the bell keepers who work so hard to protect the precious Shiroyama Bell.
During the Bell Festival, at the stroke of 10 o'clock, the eighth generation bell keepers, Mr. and Mrs. Hidaka, ring the bell 10 times.
