Nobeoka Castle Ruins and Shiroyama Park

A stroll through the castle ruins, where you can see impressive stone walls and seasonal flowers

Spreading atop a small hill in the center of Nobeoka City, this historical park preserves the memories of a once-famous castle. Step inside and you'll find yourself in another world, enveloped in silence and greenery. The park's highlight is the "Thousand-Kill Stone Wall," built by Takahashi Mototane, the first lord of the Nobeoka domain. This 19-meter-tall stone wall, true to its name, is said to have the potential to collapse with the removal of a single foundation stone, defeating a thousand enemies. Standing before it, you'll be awed by the sheer technological prowess of the time. Known as one of Japan's three major camellia trees, the park boasts approximately 3,300 colorful camellias, including some with horticultural value, blooming from winter to spring. In spring, approximately 300 cherry blossoms adorn the stone walls, which are illuminated at night for a truly magical nighttime view. The "Joyama Bell," standing on the site of the castle tower, has continued to chime the time in Nobeoka for over 100 years since 1878. From the remains of the castle tower, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the beautiful cityscape of Nobeoka, with the Gokase River flowing leisurely along the river.

Imayama Daishi

Watched over by Japan's largest statue of Kobo Daishi! The excitement of Kyushu's three major spring festivals

Overlooking downtown Nobeoka, the summit of Mt. Imayama is home to the 17-meter-tall Kobo Daishi statue, Japan's largest. It was first established in 1839 when a sacred statue was enshrined from Mount Koya to save people suffering from an epidemic. Since then, the statue has continued to watch over the town and its people with its gentle expression as a power spot for household safety and longevity. Leading up to the statue's feet are 134 stone steps. This famous spot, built from a single block of the finest granite, is also known as "Japan's Nobeoka Daishi Festival." Every year in mid-April, the statue transforms into the setting for the year's most enthusiastic celebration: the Nobeoka Daishi Festival, one of Kyushu's three major spring festivals. During the festival, many participants from within and outside the prefecture gather, erupting in joy throughout the town. During the three-day festival, solemn memorial services and goma prayers are held within the temple grounds, while snacks and drinks are served along the approach to the shrine and in the shopping district as part of the "osettai" culture. Humorous displays of "mitate-zaiku" craftsmanship and a lively local product market add to the colorful atmosphere. The festival culminates with a "city parade" on the final day. The highlight is the spectacular sight of the traditional feudal lord procession and a dance performance by a total of about 1,000 people filling the streets.
